HKUST Secures Dual UNESCO Endorsements for Two International Deep-Sea Research Programs

Two international deep-sea research initiatives, led by the Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory (Guangzhou) in collaboration with HKUST, have received UNESCO endorsement — a dual recognition of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area’s growing leadership in ocean science.

The programs will expand observation, sampling and modeling of deep-sea ecosystems, supporting conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.

The Department of Ocean Science, established under the School of Science in 2018, aims to lead from foundational knowledge to applications in marine conservation, global climate change and socio-economic sustainable development.
